For more than 60 years, Enel has brought progress to people around the world. Since the day Enel was founded in 1962, we have worked hard to enable businesses, nations, and individuals to thrive by connecting them to electricity, gas, and the right services for their needs.

In order to achieve this we have constantly embraced new technologies to make our energy more reliable, more affordable, and more sustainable, from the introduction of the first smart meter to becoming the world's largest producer of renewable energy.

We are now at the beginning of a new, exciting era for energy; an open era of participation, where everyone is connected and has the opportunity to help tackle the world's biggest challenges.

In today's fast moving and complex world we must multiply our impact and open up to truly tackle the world's biggest challenges.

That is why we are providing our services to more people in more countries, powering local economies and expanding energy access.

And that is why openness is a key element of the Group’s strategic and operational approach. For us, “Open Power” means tackling some of the biggest challenges the world faces.

Our mission

Open Power means opening energy access to more people; opening the world of energy to new technologies; opening new ways for people to manage energy; opening new uses of energy; and opening more partnerships. These are ambitious goals and we are pursuing them with the passion of people who want to change the world. Our mission, in detail, is as follows:

1. We are opening energy access to more people

We are expanding in order to reach to more people and connect more people to safe and sustainable energy, especially in South America and Africa.

2. We are opening the world of energy to new technologies

We are pioneering the development and application of new technologies for more sustainable energy generation and distribution, in particular through renewable sources and smart grids.

3. We are opening new ways for people to manage energy

We are developing new processes that meet people’s real needs, helping them use and manage energy more efficiently, specifically through smart meters and digitalization.

4. We are opening new uses for energy

We are developing new services that use energy to respond to global challenges, with a special focus on connectivity and electric transport.

5. We are opening new partnerships

We are working with a growing network of partners in research, technology, new product development and marketing in order to build new solutions together.

Carbon neutral in 2040

We are committed to renewable energy sources, above all, hydroelectric, wind, solar, geothermal, biomass and cogeneration plants. Together with our partners, we are developing technologies that respect the environment.

With respect to the decarbonization targets set out in the Paris Agreement and at COP 26, Enel will bring forward its “Net Zero” commitment by ten years, from 2050 to 2040. This is both for direct and indirect emissions, and without resorting to any offsetting measures, such as CO2 removal technologies or nature-based solutions.

Enel is working closely with the UN Global Compact, Clinton Global Initiatives, and other projects to achieve this goal together.

Smart like the Internet

Carbon neutral energy generation is not enough. We are also working on smarter, data-driven ways to analyze energy consumption in real time, distribute energy more efficiently and enable entirely new services for people.

These smart grids only deliver electricity when and where it is needed - reducing costs and waste while helping to protect the environment.

Sustainability, an objective achieved through innovation

In line with our Open Power strategic approach, Enel has placed environmental, social, and economic sustainability at the center of its corporate culture and is implementing a sustainable development system that is based on the creation of shared value, both inside and outside of the company.

Ours is part of the United Nations Global Compact Board and it is committed to concretely contributing to four of the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), regarding access to energy and to education, contributing to the socio-economic development of the communities in which the Group operates and to the fight against climate change, and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

The integration of environmental protection and biodiversity into business strategies is a key factor in Enel's business plan. We are currently following some 160 projects for the conservation of plant and animal species in 14 different countries.

Imagine a world where your devices charge automatically at the point in the midle of the night when energy is cheapest; mobility is electric; lighting reacts to your movements; high-speed internet reaches rural areas; and everybody is a producer of energy.

In an open innovation network we work with a wide range of partners to make this world a reality for individuals, businesses, and cities, and to develop services we have not even thought of yet.

Start small, think big

Inspiration and innovation can come from anywhere. That is why we are constantly looking outside our company for ideas, inspiration, and know-how. We are working on modern collaboration platforms that allow everyone to contribute: a college students, an energy start-ups, a global multi-national industrial partner.

Only by rethinking the way we innovate can we truly disrupt the industry and develop technologies and solutions that have the power to shake up old markets and create entirely new ones.
